DataStart participant fellowship recap of experience at Black Oak Analytics, a Little Rock data startup. Fellowship mainly focused on data integration of unstructured entity references. The primary goal of my work was to develop and test a more general approach to the problem of resolving entity references in free text format.

The Data Science for Social Good- Atlanta (DSSG-ATL) program brought together nine graduate students from various southern states to participate in a ten-week paid internship experience. The program has engaged student interns with diverse academic backgrounds including computer science, statistics, digital media, public policy, civil engineering, industrial engineering and urban planning, as well as diverse demographic backgrounds including underrepresented groups. DataStart provides real-world experiences for students while helping entrepreneurial companies Graduate students from six universities in the southern U.S. will spend the summer working on data challenges important to the success of new and growing technology companies thanks to a program called the Southern Startup Internship Program in Data Science (DataStart). DataStart interns will address a wide range of data-related business problems, including spotting trends in the diversity of people included in clinical trials, developing methods for using sensor data to detect loads on wind turbines, and the challenges of cleansing and standardizing data to extract more knowledge from it.

In November 2017, the National Science Foundation’s Big Data Innovation Hubs sponsored a workshop in Versailles, France to discuss the formation of public-private partnerships in big data research among institutions in the United States and the European Union. The one-day workshop began with thematic keynote speeches and panel discussions in the morning, followed by breakout sessions with facilitated discussions of innovative projects in academia and industry.
